Threats to the Information Technology and Communications Sectors Briefing

FBI speaker

CyberShare: The Small Broadband Provider ISAC received an unclassified threat briefing presentation from Supervisory Special Agent Daniel Getchell with the FBI Cyber Division.

On March 1, Getchell briefed CyberShare participants on potential threats like hackers, financially motivated groups and individuals, nation-state actors, insider threat actors, cyber terrorists, cyber warfare, and more. He also provided an overview of threat vectors in the sector such as ransomware (Ransomware as a Service), Border Gateway Protocol attacks, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Cyber criminals mainly target providers of services, supply chain, satellites, and Internet of Things, he said.

Getchell also said that “distance cannot protect you” while urging CyberShare participants to consider the following questions when deciphering the motive behind cybersecurity attacks:

  • “Who can be ransomed?"
  • "Who can be attacked?"
  • "Who has money?”

The expert provided FBI and FBI-affiliated cybersecurity resources to the participants. CyberShare continues to expand and grow given the expertise of government officials, industry leaders, and advocates of the cyberspace.
